Despite the title, it seems Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite won’t have unlimited matchmaking potential, with the forthcoming fighting game shipping without cross-platform play.

After Street Fighter V shipped with cross-platform matchmaking, there was buzz in the community that Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite would get the same treatment. However, in an interview with VG247, Capcom producer Mike Evans stated plainly that it wasn’t to be.

“Street Fighter 5 is cross platform play and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite will not be,” and mentioned the trouble that Capcom are having getting the Capcom Fighters Network to operate smoothly in Street Fighter V. “We decided that for Infinite it’s just a better approach to try and get it into as many hands as possible on day one so that tons of people can enjoy it.”

Evans stressed that they’re focussing on a multiplatform release with equal focus on the Xbox, PC and PS4. While this could split the industry slightly, it’s likely that a core scene will develop around just one of the game’s platforms, and competitive play should continue as normal.
